Our comments: Everyone agreed that this was an extremely inspirational novel that touched hearts and even produced tears. Tanya T. said that she met someone that knew the author and they said the entire book was really true. Much of it was hard to believe from the viewpoint of how some people are treated even in this day and time. Behaviors that we thought were over and done with still exist in this country. The author has written a sequel, and he and Denver are still living at the ranch. I believe that the original book is being made into a movie soon.
We had quite a discussion about the homeless, how they are perceived, and how they are treated. I found out that many of our members keep ziploc bags in their car with items that the homeless may need (bottles of water, snacks, socks, etc.) and hand them out on the street corner when they see someone in need. I have never done this, but I will start now. Our newest member, Lovely W. also told us about a breakfast and lunch that her church provides for the homeless once a month. If you want more information on this, please contact me. The book was wonderful, and the conversations that it produced were even better. I know that I learned many things that I didn't know about, and found out more ways that I can help others. I think it produced this reaction in all of us.
