Our comments:
We had two members of the group that were born in Mississippi, so they were able to give us great perspectives of this book. It sounds like most of the incidents in this book could be real in that day and time. Thank goodness that way of life is over. We all agreed that we were far too bold and opinionated to live in that era, and something would probably have happened to us. It was hard to identify with the main characters of the novel.
There were many funny highlights during the discussion, and I wish I could remember more of them to share. Tom said he could hear the laughter all the way on the other side of the house and out by the street when he was walking the dogs!
Two that I do remember:
Loved the comment about Cheri and her cherry jello - you guys that missed the meeting missed a great story about a beauty ritual. It was certainly something that none of us had heard of before.
Another one of our members thought the pie had chocolate pudding in it, but everyone else agreed that they thought it was the real thing (you would have to read the book to know what I am talking about). It never dawned on us that pudding would be a substitute. That particular part of the book grossed me out and almost ruined the book for me!
Great meeting. Look forward to next month. I am very excited about reading our next selection. Happy reading!
