After a year of non-stop blanket making, I am taking off until January. I am extremely proud to say that all of my blankets were either sold at the Hearts and Hands Market to support women's and children's charities in Houston, or were donated to shelters and children in need. I had many donors this year that bought blankets and agreed to donate money for another blanket for a person in need for every blanket they bought. They received their blanket at cost in return for donating to another person in need. That sounds like a win-win situation!!
I am recovering from eye surgery, but hope to collaborate on a video teaching how to make the blankets from start to finish, and to complete a mixed media painting that I have been planning in my mind for several months. We will see if I can get all of that accomplished.
Thank you for your support. Hopefully I will be better about blogging next year. I just left that to updates on Facebook this year.
They wanted "new blood" in Mission Stitchers, so I introduced my new idea to them today. Mission Stitchers needs to be on Facebook. I don't think there are too many Facebookers in the crowd, but the leader of the group likes the idea, and I think we are going to tie it into the Hearts and Hands Facebook page. Will check on that at the end of the week.
Also, one of the members gave me a beautiful hat to give to Laura. She gave me directions on how to make it, but I would rather her show me. I learn better that way. I'm not sure she is willing to take the time to do that, but I hope to learn how to make these hats. Gorgeous!
Instead of working on a blanket today at Mission Stitchers, I helped with walker pockets. I did a lot of cutting of material and have decided that a pattern needs to be made for these. That will be my project during this week.
Also, I am working on Laura's blanket. She is a friend of Amy's and is coming to Houston for surgery. She loves patriotic things, so she will be getting some form of blanket in red, white, and blue. Have had trouble finding material, so I may use some that I have had for a while. I think now that must be the reason I was saving it. I hope she likes it.
Took a couple of my blankets to the first Mission Stitchers meeting for 2014. They really liked them and want to put a couple in the Hearts and Hands Market in October. While we were meeting, a lady came in and donated two large pieces of fleece for blankets and they were given to me. I guess those will be the first two to put up for sale.
Here is one of the Mission Stitchers working on her 1930's "featherweight" sewing machine.
15 blankets have been donated to the Hummingbird Ministry, a ministry supported by UMW and Memorial Drive United Methodist Church. 10 were donated as Christmas gifts, and 5 additional ones have been donated in January to help with the cold weather we are having. Hummingbird Ministry supports a Women's and Children's Domestic Violence Shelter.
Another one for the Hummingbird Ministry. This is perfect for the little girl that loves kittens and cats. Beautiful pink, white, and teal accents.
Who could resist this fun blanket? 6 row of single crochets in 3 different colors plus a row of double crochet ruffle. Sounds perfect for a girl! Donated to the Hummingbird Ministry.
Lots of Knots has found several charities that are interested in their blankets. It feels good to be making them again for people that need them, love them, and want them.
Lots of Knots donated 5 blankets to the Hearts and Hand Market at MDUMC. They were put into the Silent Auction and all of them sold. I was able to meet most of the people that bought them and it was very fulfilling. One was bought by expectant parents (and they were so excited about the blanket), one grandmother bought 2, one for each granddaughter, one was picked out by a little girl and she asked her grandmother to buy that for her for Christmas, and I didn't get to meet the person that bought the polka dot one - which was extremely cute!!
I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph. Some adjectives that come to mind: curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think? Claire
