Mother/Daughter Study

3/29/2010

Well, I just got back from participating in the medical study.  I left at 9:00 this morning to pick up my mom and we didn't get back from the medical center until 3:30.  That wasn't the bad part of the day.  The bad part was that they took 13 vials of blood from me.  13!  Anyone that knows me knows that I have very small veins and dread blood tests.  They couldn't get all of it out of my arm, so they had to go into my hand.  I think I would think twice before agreeing to this test again.  It does sound interesting though.  There will be extensive heart testing, blood level testing, and genetic testing.  Some of this would cost over $3,000, but I am getting it all free because I am a volunteer.  I hope I hear good news after all of that.

Other than that, it was fun spending the day with my mom.  We had to fast all night and day and didn't get to eat until 3:30 this afternoon.  Sure makes you appreciate a good meal.

I guess that is about all of the news for now.  There are only 2 more days until the final list update.  We have gotten great responses and I will post a letter April 1.  Enjoy this beautiful weather!

Check out the latest posts in the Book Club Blog.  We are looking for something entertaining for the summer.  There are 4 suggestions that I found and I think they all sound good.  They are all on sale, so I may end up buying them anyway.  They sound light-hearted and fun.  I did read Cold Sassy Tree years ago and loved it.  Wouldn't mind reading it again.  Any other suggestions?

Update on the Reunion

We spent the weekend in Alexandria, Louisiana at my husband's high school reunion.  I won't say the amount of years!  It was a lot of fun and we won an award at the assembly.  They had an old fashioned assembly in the school auditorium the morning of the dinner/dance.  They told various stories, had a photo presentation with era music, and gave prizes to people that fit into certain categories.  We won for the couple that had been married the shortest amount of time (under two years).  After having to stand up and go on stage for that, we were the hit of the reunion that night.  All evening at the dance, everyone wanted to hear our story.  They thought it was great.  Like I told them, they didn't ask how long we had known each other - only how long we had been married.

We got to visit with family members in Alexandria and then went on to Baton Rouge Sunday morning.  We had a great day with the family there and made Easter eggs with the grandchildren.  Of course, Averie made the prettiest one, and Adyson helped.  We had an Easter Egg hunt in the house and the girls loved it.  All in all, it was a great weekend.

Now it is back to making blankets.  Actually I am going to start on my rag quilt this week.  I do have to prepare some blankets for the Word of Life lesson next week, but I am almost finished with those.  I am so glad that we may be getting some more people involved with our mission.  I am also hearing back about our commitment to 2 blankets a year per member.  I will send out a reminder at the end of this week.

Hope everyone had a great spring break and that the weather warms up a little - just a little though.

March evening meeting

We had a nice, but small meeting this evening.  Sherry came over early so we could work on her blanket.  She had really only had half of a lesson, and was having difficulty finishing it.  We went through all the steps, and helped her tie the knots, and now she has completed her first blanket.  Yeah Sherry!   She is enthusiastic about starting her second one and learned many new tips that should help her make it a much easier process.

Tanya talked about the book, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. I have to admit, I could not get through it.  It seemed a little tedious to me and I didn't enjoy it.  I usually will finish a book, but this was one the I couldn't finish reading.  Oh well, that's the way it goes sometimes.

We have our April and May books picked out, so check the Book Club Blog to see the choices.  They both come highly recommended, and I am anxious to get started on both of them.  There is not a whole lot more to say about this meeting.  Many were out of town due to spring break and we expected that.  It was enjoyable to have a small quiet group that could visit and relax.  My mom was here also.  She is here to "babysit" the animals when we go out of town to Tom's high school reunion.  I think she is looking forward to it.  Hope all of you had a great spring break.

Check out the new video location at the top of the Homemade Products page.  Have a great weekend!

Meeting Reminder

Our evening meeting will be this Thursday at 6:30.  I think we will have a small group because of Spring Break.  I have heard from several people that they will be out of town.   We decided earlier in the year to have the meeting even though it was Spring Break week, so if you are in town, drop by.  We are leaving Friday to go to my husband's high school reunion in Louisiana.  He hasn't been to one before, so it will be interesting to see if he knows anyone.  I believe that there are several people that stayed in town, so I think he will recognize a few.  Hope everyone is having a great week.

Check out the new video on the Homemade Products page.  I placed it there so it wouldn't get lost in the blog.  It has also been rearranged and changed a little--not a lot.  I will keep adding to as it as make more items and deliveries.  Thanks so much for your participation.  See you Thursday.

Perfect Day

3/13/2010

Yesterday was a great day.  The Bayland Low Vision Club is such a fun, nice group of people.  They welcomed mom like they had known her forever.  There were two good speakers and free lunch provided.  I had a birthday cake for mom (which was a surprise) and everyone sang Happy Birthday to her.  She was very surprised and happy.  Mary brought her a beautiful camellia from her yard, and it was a perfect red bloom.  At the end of the meeting, I read from a book named This I Believe.  It is a compilation of essays that they play on a program on NPR.  I didn't realize that it started 50 years ago and now they brought it back. I read a little bit about the history of it and then read a selection.  It was about being happy, and it seemed to be just the right thing for the day.  Then the center talked about a combined trip to see the Bluebonnets and the Painted Churches of S.  We all signed up for that and will go on April 6.  It is an all day trip and we will have lunch somewhere along the way.  The Bluebonnets are supposed to be beautiful this year because of the cold weather.  I hope they are.  Mom has never seen Bluebonnets, and she was very excited about the trip.  All in all it was a perfect day.  The sun was shining, the temperature was perfect, the group was fun and comfortable, we met some new people, and everything just fit.  Don't you love days like that?

Happy Birthday

Today is my mother's 82nd birthday.  We spent all day yesterday in the medical center for her follow-up visit with her cardiologist.  They are very excited about her progress and think that she is doing a great job.  We are going to participate in a mother/daughter study there next week.

We are on our way to the Houston Low Vision Group meeting this morning at Bayland Community Center.  What a wonderful group of people they are.  They were so friendly to me last month, and that is when I met Lovely.  She found out about our group and decided that she wanted to help us make blankets. She is going to show her first one off this morning.   Go Lovely!!!

It is a beautiful day and I am looking forward to spending it with my mother.  I am so glad and grateful that she lives so close now and that we get to spend so much more time together.  I am looking forward to seeing the people at Bayland again.  We have a birthday cake surprise for my mom.   I will read a couple of passages to them from the This I Believe book.  I hope they will enjoy them.

Morning Meeting Notes

3/10/2010

I was disappointed at the attendance of our morning meeting.  This is such an important venture for me and I have waited so long in my life to be able to organize it, that I hoped many felt the same way.  In my heart, I choose to believe that many do.

I was thrilled that Martha showed up, and that we got a chance to spend more time getting to know each other.  I am sad that she didn't get a chance to meet anyone else in the group.  I know that by reading about our group meetings and all that we have accomplished in such a short time, that she was not expecting to be the only one to show up for two months in a row.  I am happy to say that she is committed to making a blanket a month, and she and I agree that it isn't a hard commitment to meet.  After making a couple of them, you can finish one in 2-3 hours, especially with the fringe tie.  She also has a great commitment to Star of Hope, because they provide a great service to the community, and because her son is working on his Eagle Scout project there.

I hope that most of the people on our mailing list decide to help with at least 2 blankets this year or the donation of material to make two blankets.  If they could have seen the faces of the people at Star of Hope, I think there would be no question that they would contribute.  I know how busy everyone is.  I have a busy life too.  I just feel that life is about making a difference and we are so fortunate to have the lives that we have.  Surely we can help others less fortunate.  If not, what does that say about our society and our future?

Oh well, it is time to go to bed.  I will wake up in the morning hoping that I hear positive results from the letter that was sent out today.  Then on to my next venture--contacting businesses for support and a mention on our sponsor page.  It truly is all for a very worthwhile cause.  I don't think that anyone that truly knows me would say that I give up easily, so the project will continue and continue to grow.

Morning meeting tomorrow

3/8/2010

Our morning group will meet tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.  I hope that we have a group showing up and ready to work on our blanket commitment for this year.  The Star of Hope Transitional Center was so thrilled to receive our donation, and they are looking forward to more coming in down the road.

Our evening group has been very dependable, and they told me that they mark this meeting on their calendar every month and look forward to coming, visiting, and knowing that they are also contributing to the community.  Our morning group has been a little bit sporadic, and it may be time to revisit the day and time we meet, or if they even want to continue meeting.  I am very committed to this, and I hope that they do want to continue.  I guess we will find out soon.

To help you plan your monthly meetings, I am listing the dates that we have planned meetings:

March 9, Tuesday, 10:00 am- 2:00 pm
March 18, Thursday, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
April 13, Tuesday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
April 15, Thursday, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
May 11, Tuesday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
May 20, Thursday, 6:30 - 9:30 pm

We will continue to meet throughout the summer, but I will wait to list the dates after seeing if the morning group wants to continue.

Notice that the April meetings are during the same week.  This is just a fluke of the calendar where the 2nd Tuesday and the 3rd Thursday are in the same week.  If we need to change it, we would need to change the morning meeting.  We will see how it all goes after tomorrow.  Have a great day and I hope to see some of you tomorrow morning.

Hope you checked out the video and saw many of our products and how excited the people were at Star of Hope.  We are doing something wonderful!
