Update on the week

Well, I don't know about you, but I had a great week.  We had our painting class and it was a lot of fun.  We did so much visiting and paint mixing, that we did not finish the painting and will have a second class on Wednesday, May 2.  Judy went home and finished hers and a photo of it is in the Artist blog.  It will be interesting to see all of the differences in the paintings because we are using different colors and placing things a little differently.  I think they will be great.  I have already come up with ideas for another class, so I hope everyone is interested.

Our massage day was a little funny.  My mom decided not to go with us.  I think she didn't want to miss her lunch and friends at the Terrace during the afternoon.  Cindy, Susan, and I met at The Egg and I and had a light lunch, and then we were off to the Chinese Reflexology place.  There is always a little communication problem there, but it is easily worked out.  They did have a few other customers at the time, so my hope that we would have the place to ourselves didn't work out.

I told them we wanted the hour and a half massage and everyone got placed and started.  Jeanie, the one that I like, was not there that day, so I had a new person.  I still very much enjoyed the massage, but I could tell she was a little new and she didn't know all of my sore spots quite as well as Jeanie.  We also didn't get the hot stones like I usually get.  I was surprised, but didn't say anything.

Anyway, at the end, when we went to pay, they charged us more money than it has been in the past.  When I questioned it, they tried to explain, and I tried to explain, but we were both speaking different languages.  Pretty soon everyone that works there was in the front speaking Chinese and discussing something.  I finally asked Lucy, the one that speaks English,  to tell me what they were saying.  She said that I had asked for the hour and a half massage, which is $50.  I said yes, and then she said I usually get the 90 minute massage, which is $40.  That comes with hot stones also.  It was exactly the same massage except we didn't have the hot stones.  So we were going to have to pay MORE for the same amount of time with no stones.

She told the girl to charge us $40 because I told her I said the wrong thing.  Who would have known that the better massage was cheaper?  I learned my lesson and will now ask for the 90 minute hot stone massage.  I thought it was hilarious!!   I hope Cheri and Susan enjoyed theirs as much as I enjoyed mine.  I also hope that we will be able to do it again soon.

Painting Class and Lots of Knot's Massage Day

Painting class - Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 24, YEAH!!!

We are going to have so much fun. Please bring your easel, a snack or lunch, 16 x 20 canvas, and paintbrushes. If you have a particular color of paint that you want to change from the original (attached), please bring that too. I originally asked you to bring white paint, and if you have that, please bring it too. I was able to find some. Try to meet here around 10:30 so that we have enough time to do all that we want to do. You know that we have to add a lot of "visiting" time into the schedule.

I am in the process of moving furniture out of my breakfast room because that is where I want to have the class. I will have to cover the floor with drop cloths, so my house will be in DISARRAY! I am such an organized person, that this bothers me, but I am working through it :o) You will just have to realize that furniture has been moved to places it is not supposed to be, and the breakfast area will be a mess - a fun, colorful, artistic mess!!!! My easel has already fallen apart, so hopefully you don't have the $15.00 kind like I bought. I think Tom will be able to fix it tonight.

Massage day,Friday, April 27

We will meet at The Egg and I at Memorial and Kirkwood around 11:45. If you are a little late or early, that's OK. Just get a table or look for us. This will give everyone plenty of time to have a casual, relaxed lunch. Sometimes they are crowded and sometimes they aren't, so this should be enough time to cover it all. I will make the reservations for massage on WEDNESDAY. I need to hear from everyone that is interested by then, if I haven't heard from you and responded already.

I will make the reservations for 1:00. They will be prepared for the hour and a half hot stone massage, but if you only want an hour, that is OK also. I usually pay cash, but they do take credit cards. You need to wear shorts so that they can massage all the way up to your knee. I wear walking type shorts. I would also advise to wear a loose fitting comfortable shirt with a large open neck. This way they can get down to your shoulders and a little of your spine during the head massage. Don't wear earrings as they will massage your ears also. Don't wear contact lenses as they will be doing a very nice face massage along with the head. I wouldn't bother with make-up because it will get messed up. I don't wear a bra either. That way the straps don't get in the way when they are doing their back massage. I will leave that up to you :)

Be prepared to relax, deep breathe, and listen to calming music. If you have special places (hips, neck, etc.) that you want them to address, we need to talk about that before you go to the back. I will help you with all of this.If you want to come to lunch only and no massage, that is OK. If you want to come to massage only, and no lunch, that is OK.

This is going to be another fun, relaxing day, like our painting day - just different.

I am so glad that you guys are open to so many different things to do. I love all of this!!

Book and Funny Story

4/21/2012

I am about halfway through our May book and it is FABULOUS!! It is one of those books that I don't want to put down and I haven't read one of those in a while. I love the author's style of writing and all of the wonderful description. I hope you are enjoying it also.

Have to tell you a funny story from last night. If you read my e-mail from yesterday, you know that I was leaving about 5:30 or so for a Chinese Reflexology massage. Tom and I started going there at the beginning of the year for two reasons: it just opened down the street from us and we wanted to try it, and the lady that used to give us massages had knee replacement surgery in October 2011 and had been unable to continue doing massages due to some problems with the healing process. We didn't think she would be able to do that line of work anymore because it required so much standing.  She is a friend of a friend of mine and we have known her for years. We felt a little guilty about going somewhere else, but since it looked like she wasn't going to be able to massage again, we found this new place and have been very satisfied. Ok, that's the back story.

A month ago, she calls - her name is Dr. C. She says she is ready to start massaging again and can she come that weekend. We say OK, have our massages (she comes to the house and is very reasonable), and we tell her we don't know when we will need another one, maybe a month or so, not knowing what to do about her and this new place. She doesn't have her calendar out and we do not set a date (at least as far as we know). I talk to my friend that knows her and she says she will translate and tell her that we have found someone else. I feel terribly guilty and don't want to hurt her feelings, so I just say, let's wait and see if we hear from her again. We didn't set up a date and maybe she will be so busy that she goes on to someone else (we had been having her come every other week).

So I go last night and get my wonderful massage. Tom decides he doesn't need one and is going to go to Petsmart to get dog and cat food and will come back by and pick me up. He picks me up and as we turn on our street we see a car parked in front of the house. Tom goes "Oh no, you know who that is?" I am in a massage stupor and don't recognize the car. It is Dr. C!! She is standing at our door. We drive in the driveway and I ask Tom, "What are we going to do?" He says, "Well, I guess we are going to get massages!" So we come in and let her in the front door and she is greeting us and telling us that it is a month from the time she was here and we have an appointment. I tell her that I didn't realize that we had an appt. while Tom is setting up the massage table in the extra room.

Long story short, he gets and hour and a half massage, and then I get an hour and a half massage after already getting an hour and a half at the other place. I had three hours of massage last night!!! I could barely wake up this morning. We went out to breakfast and I came home and went back to bed and slept until 1:30 in the afternoon. I guess I was super relaxed from last night!!! I wonder if anyone has ever gotten 3 hours of massage in one evening?  When I checked voice mail, there were a couple of messages from her telling us she was on her way over here, but we weren't here to receive them.

It was a funny night!!

Hope all of you had a great weekend!!

Personal experience at Texas Children's Hospital

Picture
I would like to share one of the many wonderful, inspiring experiences I had while delivering blankets to the children at Texas Children's Hospital in the Houston Medical Center.

I would usually go in the patient's room with three blankets in my hands, talk to the patient, explain who I was, why our group was there, and then ask them if they had a favorite color, hobby, animal, etc. I would look at what I had in my hands to see if it fit the criteria, or I would explain that I was going out to the cart in the hallway to see if I would be able to find something they might like.

I walked into one of the rooms with three blankets (one being in the photograph on the left).  The reason I remember it so well was because I made it.  I loved the color and the yarn combination, but had no idea if anyone else would.  When I walked into the room, I saw that the patient was a 13-15 year old girl.  She was standing by her bed and was a little surprised to see a stranger in her room.  I could tell by the look on her face that she wasn't sure what was going on.

When I told her the information above, she pointed to "my blanket" and said, "That's the one I want.  I love it!"  I was so excited that I said, "I made this one!"  She grabbed me and hugged me and thanked me over and over.  I don't know which one of us was the most excited.  It was a very brief encounter, but it meant everything to me at that moment. I hope and pray it helps her to heal and enjoy a wonderful, long, healthy life.

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
