May meeting and June Book

5/23/2011

Check the Book Club Blog for the June Book.   We will skip July, like we did last year, due to so many vacations.  Yeah!!!

The year is flying by and I will try to post the future book selections by the end of May.

I also have photos of some of the new blankets that I will be posting on the new Homemade Products 2011 page.  I had to separate them from the 2010 photos and videos because there were too many!!!  What a great problem to have.

We had a great meeting in May.  Amy and Tanya showed us their new crochet-edged blankets.  We also are doing the no-sew (tied) fleece blankets, sewed fleece blankets, and sewed flannel blankets.  I will have my crochet lesson this week, and hopefully I will be able to make some of the single layer yarn-edged blankets also.  They are adorable!!

Our book discussion was short.  I don't think anyone was overly impressed with the book.  We all hoped for a real page-turning mystery, but this wasn't the one.  There were too many things that didn't fit, too many questions left unanswered, and practically no character development.  It was hard to care or empathize with the characters.  Oh well, there is always next month!

Blanket meeting this week

Thank you so much to those of you that have responded to the Lots of Knots request for help with blankets for the homeless or the less fortunate.  I will be meeting at Helga's house this Thursday, May 26 at 2:30 if you would like more information about what we do, need help making blankets, or want to drop off a check (for those of you that committed to financial help).  All money will be used for supplies - fleece, yarn, etc.  All labor is free and provided for by Lots of Knots members.

If this date doesn't work for you, we are very willing to schedule another date.  For more information about us, please check out the website at www.lotsofknots.org.

I will bring samples of what we are doing this year.  We have some great new ideas and I am very excited to be able to say that at Thursday's meeting, we had 14 blankets turned in!!!  What an incredible job all of you do.  I am trying to get in touch with the new Texas Children's Hospital to see if they would like our products this year.

I would love to see you this Thursday.

May Meeting

5/12/2011

The May meeting is Thursday, May 19.  I can't wait to see some of the new blankets that are being made.  I am still waiting for some of my "equipment" to come in before I can get my crochet lesson.  I am hoping for over the weekend.    For instructions on the new crochet edged blankets, see the previous postings.  I tied a blanket this week, and have another one that I am planning to sew together.  We will have many different kinds to give away this year!!!

Check the Book Club Blog for the link to discussion questions for the May book.  I also hope that everyone has had a chance to think about some of the suggestions for future book club books or perhaps will have some new suggestions.  We need to make a few decisions about our books and our summer meetings.  See you next week.

Single layer fleece patterns (can also use flannel)

The link for the pattern for a single layer fleece blanket with crochet (easy) edging is posted below.  I will be learning how to do this soon and Tanya is already doing it, so we will have help!  I know that Amy and Cheri J. know how to crochet also, and possibly Diane, so we are in good hands.  It looks so cute, and it will be lightweight for the person that doesn't like a heavy blanket.  It will also make our material go a lot further and we will be able to make more blankets.  Of course, we have to figure the yarn into the equation.

My mom has also come up with a new way to tie a blanket when it is only one layer.  She is experimenting with it now, but what I saw looked good.  It's amazing how many good things can come from all of these wonderful brains put together.

Check out the pattern.  I am ordering a blade today, and hopefully will understand this by the next meeting  :o)

Also check out the pattern posted on 12/21/2010.  It may be the same or different.  At this point, I don't know!!!

Perforating Rotary Blades

The blades that we were looking for (and not really sure if they really existed) are available!  The good news is that they work and they are not expensive!!  JoAnn's does not have them, but I am enclosing the link below.  Tanya found them at a quilt show and has been using them for the last couple of weeks.  I am thinking from her description that she has the original size (made for fleece).  They also offer a larger and a smaller size, as you will see on the website.  She has been using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn and has had no problem.  She is putting a simple edging on them.

The smaller size can be used for flannel or possibly smaller yarn???  I need the experts in the group to tell us about this.

The post below will show you a pattern for a simple edging and a little bit more elaborate one.  I don't know how to crochet, but my mom's friend is supposed to teach me.  If not, I'm hoping that one of you can.  I believe the only stitches we need to know are the single and double crochet.  Believe me, if it was going to be too complicated, I wouldn't be doing it.  I like to make things that I enjoy working on.

Anyway, here is the link if you want more information:

See posting on 12/21/2010 and 5/3/2011 for patterns!

April Meeting

5/1/2011

We had a great turnout at our April meeting.  I'm glad you got a chance to meet part of our family, and that Averie decided that she wanted to stay with us and see what we did during our meetings.  Remind me to tell you about her comment after the meeting!  So sweet and childlike.

It seems we agree that this book was not nearly as enjoyable as Sarah's Key.  The character development (and our lack of a deep caring for the characters) made it seem like "just a quick book to follow-up on her success of Sarah's Key."  I would imagine that after writing a very successful book, it is hard to come up with another one so quickly.  Most of our discussion revolved around keeping information a secret - yes or no - would it hurt the other person?  What would you do?  I don't think anyone had a definitive answer because it would depend on the secret.  My personal opinion is that the truth is the best way to go - no matter what.  It will eventually come out anyway, and then betrayal can be added to the list of events.  Just my opinion  :o)

Check out the Book Club blog for the May book.  There are also some suggestions for the summer and fall months.  If you have any more, please let me know and I will post them.  I would encourage you to do a little investigating on your own.  I just copied the main reviews from Amazon.  I also attached a video of an interview with the author when it was available.  They all sound good to me, and they are all available in paperback, so please let me know what you think.  Which one, if any, are you interested in reading first, not at all, another suggestion?

We have added a few new members to our mailing list - most of them are contributing money for blankets and will not be able to make the monthly meetings.  Thank you so much for your support.  WE WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO COME TO A MEETING AND MEET EVERYONE!  You are always welcome.  We do seem to have a main core group, and I thank all of you for participating.  We have a good time together, are helping the less fortunate, and enriching our minds with a good book and discussion!  Hard to beat that!

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
