Mahjong

9/22/2012

Several people I know have expressed an interest in learning how to play Mahjong. I have always wanted to learn also, and now I am trying to get a group together, set a day and time, and start learning.  I know that setting the time and day will be the hardest thing about this.

Maybe the first thing to do is to get a list of names of people that are interested. I have two different options on how to learn, but to keep everyone from having to read all of those messages, I think I will just ask the people that ARE interested in learning and ARE interested in making a time commitment, to respond to this note by September 30. Then we can start among ourselves to try to figure out a time and day.

I know for sure that I will not be able to do it weekly. I think we have to at least do it monthly or we won't remember or keep the commitment. Maybe every other week will work. I don't know.

September Meeting

9/22/2012

We had a great meeting Thursday evening. We were missing a few people, but we still had great conversation, laughs, and somewhat of a book discussion :) Some liked the book, some didn't, but we all learned about leprosy (Hansen's Disease) and Hawaii. It turned out that most of us had done extra research on those subjects, so I think overall that indicates interest in the book and its subject. Plus, everyone attending the meeting had read the book!!!

The October selection is posted on the website. There is a lot of interest in this book, so I don't want to say too much about it. I hope everyone enjoys it because I was the one that suggested it. For those of you that weren't at the meeting, I will give you a quick run down as to why. I was riding in the car one day and heard a book discussion on NPR about this book. I remembered reading it a long time ago. It was apparently longer than I thought because it is at least 20 years old. Anyway, the discussion was very interesting because people are still reading it and still discussing it. I guess you would say it still has a following. The author supposedly was never able to write a book that was as good or popular. They also made a movie about it and changed the ending, and many people were upset about that. We decided that we would read the book (it has been rereleased) and then we will get together and watch the movie.

I LOVE this idea. I know that the biggest challenge will be in setting a time and date to do the movie thing. Even if you know that you will not be able to attend the October LOTS meeting, be sure to read the book so you can come to the movie night.

I have been informed that Dee is already working on one now. She was tickled as can be to see them. Needless to say my arms and back are sore! I'm going to send out a couple more short notes to everyone to try to line some other things up. I didn't want everyone to try to read long e-mail notes. Have a great weekend!! Claire P.S. Thank you Cheri for the grabber thing (can't remember the name of it). It was a tremendous help when working with all of that material. I still have a few pieces of donated material if anyone is interested.

Meeting Reminder

Our Lots of Knots meeting is this Thursday (9/20) evening at 6:30 at my house. I think I have the website updated as of today. I didn't realize that it had been about 2 months since I posted anything. I guess that will tell you how busy my summer has been. If you get a chance, please let me know if you plan to attend this Thursday.

My goal for this weekend is to straighten and cut holes in at least 10 blankets. Mom and Dee are anxious to make some more, and I told them I wasn't doing it during the summer, and they are ready now.

Martha, Susan, Amy, Mom, and I attended the Project Linus meeting this past Thursday. It was as creative and delicious as usual. The lunch was exceptionally good, and a good idea, and the dessert was one of the best I have EVER had in my life. I am claiming it right now as the dish I am going to bring to the Christmas dinner. I never get to bring dessert, so this time I would like to do that. It is posted on the website under the recipe tab. I'm not even a chocolate fan, and I think I could have eaten twice as much as I was served. It was very good.

If you have anything to bring for the nursing home project, please bring it to the meeting. We will give a bag of stuff to Tanya to take to the quilt store. Also, my cranberry crate "Little Free Library" showed up in the mail this week, HOA approved it, we have our sign, shingles are donated, so we are almost ready to go. If you have any books that you would like to donate, please bring to the meeting. It will probably be another two weeks before we are up and running. www.littlefreelibrary.org

I made a suggestion for the October book, but we are certainly open to other suggestions. I just threw that out there because I heard an interview about it on NPR and remembered reading it a long time ago. It was interesting that it still had such a strong following. They were also discussing the movie and wondering why the screenwriters changed the ending when it had such a good ending in the book. I couldn't remember how it ended, so I figured I would have to read it again:) Anyway, come with some good suggestions for October, November, and possibly January. I am assuming we are having our dinner in December. Let me know what you think about that.
I think that is it. Hope to see you Thursday.

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
