Notes from November meeting

11/18/2012

We decided to have our December meeting at a restaurant this year. It has been a little too chaotic at my house to host it again, but it was really fun last year and maybe we can try to that again in 2013.

We are going to meet at The Devine Affair at 6:30 on the SECOND Tuesday of December.  That is December 13.  The third Tuesday is too close to Christmas, and just wouldn't work for many.  If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.  I thought someone might have a place that they wanted to try, but no one had suggestions.  No one has been to the Devine Affair, and it is very close, so that is it unless someone comes up with another suggestion.    I will send out an evite when it gets closer to the day.  Please respond so we will know what size table to get.

We had a great meeting last Thursday.  I think we have zeroed in on our core group, the ones that attend regularly and are interested in participating with the blankets, books, etc.  We made a joint decision to "clean up" the e-mail list and I will be doing that this week.

We also decided to give the book club a short break.  We usually don't read a book in December anyway, so we will talk about it again in January.   The comments were:
  • I like to read books that I might not normally choose myself
  • I would like the books to be ones that are at the library because I don't want to have to buy all of them
  • Some months could be "unassigned" months and we can come and each talk about a book we read that month and enjoyed.  Good to bring a copy of it also.

Then we watched the movie.  We popped popcorn and had freshly roasted pumpkin seeds that Cheri brought.  Delicious!!  To me, the movie seemed dated.  Some movies hold up over time, but I thought this one didn't.  Harrison Ford was so monotonous, the courtroom scenes were a little unrealistic (leading the witness), and I did find lots of changes from the book.  I also liked the book ending better.  That being said, I think it was an OK movie and I am glad that we watched it.  It was a fun thing to do.  The only problem is that we started it later than planned, and our meeting ended very late.  We didn't talk about it too much because everyone was ready to get home.  We all remembered parts of the book in different ways.  Anyway, I thought it was a fun thing to do.

I am so proud of our group and the fact that we have stayed together this long.  I think we will have renewed energy in January and will start the new year ready to make blankets and set our goals for the year.  Hopefully we will also have some good book recommendations.   See you in December!!

Bad Birthday Month :(

11/13/2012

Well, October sure didn't end up being as I planned.  Birthday month turned out to be a disaster and continued into November.  First I was diagnosed with glaucoma and a hole in my retina.  I had to have eye surgery and quit my exercise program that I was enjoying so much.  I had allergic reactions to the medications that they gave me and spent the month with huge, red, swollen, itchy eyes, and many visits to the eye doctor.  It also caused many episodes of lowering my blood pressure and me feeling weak and faint. Then my mom got extremely sick and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance.  That was the night of our October meeting, so it was canceled.

I am happy to say that my mom is doing great.  They had prescribed a wrong medication for her also.  We have had lots of trouble the last couple of months with medication!!   I think I am getting better.  They said the surgery was successful and I am to go back in three months and check on that again.  They changed the eye drops and now I have to take them three times a day, but I think things are better.  It is a little hard to tell so soon.

Anyway, I have hopes of it all getting better soon!  Had to spend a lot of time at home - couldn't read, crochet, drive, exercise, etc.  Pretty boring.  I did make some fantastic succulent arrangements.  I'm finally learning which ones work and how to arrange them.  They look great!!

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
