Information sent out about crochet edging lesson for single fleece blankets

A day and time has been set for a lesson for those of you that want to learn how to do the first row of the crochet edging on the blanket.  This "class" will be for the first row only - the foundation or blanket stitch.  See the blog, dated 5/3/11 under KnotKnews Blog for more information.  It is very easy, and you don't have to know anything about crocheting to learn how to do this.  If I could learn how to do it, believe me anyone can.  It is a lot of fun, and I think I have made about 10 blankets so far with this stitch. I also learned how to do the "fan" finishing row later on, and have been going back and adding that to the ones that I had already completed. Photos are on the Handmade Products 2011 page.

Amy is going to try to come to this meeting also, so we will have more than one teacher.  If anyone else that knows how to do this already wants to come, please feel free to do so.  We will meeting Wednesday, August 3 at 2:00 at my house.  I would allow for at least an hour, but most likely 2 hours, since we have several people coming.  I have fleece already cut and with the holes punched.  If you want to use some of my fleece, I am asking you to do one of two things:  1) bring at least 2-3 yards of fleece to replace what you will be taking, along with a skein of yarn (I have been buying Red Heart Super Saver and it seems to be doing fine.  I buy it at Michael's and it is usually around $3 or $4) or 2) donate the $30.00 that we asked other members to donate if they just wanted to contribute money for material.  If you donate, I will go to JoAnn's and buy fabric and yarn.

If you want to bring your own fleece and learn how to cut the holes, I have a hole cutter you can use while you are here.  Information on the rotary cutter blade is posted on the blog on 5/2/11.   I would allow for extra time if you decide to do that because I will help with the first crochet "lesson" first so that everyone can be practicing while they are here.  IT IS VERY EASY!  Amy taught me in a matter of minutes and I just practiced until I felt comfortable with it.  I was able to edge a blanket that same evening.

We will schedule another day for the second edging lesson if you want to learn that.  Originally I thought I would just do the first one on mine because it looks fine.  BUT, then I learned how to do the second edging and I have been CRAZY around here !!!crocheting every night.  It is somewhat addictive, so I am warning you now!!!! Between Amy and I we have probably made 20 blankets.  Some are for gifts and some are for donations.  It was a great thing to do while I was taking care of my mom.

You will also need to bring your own crochet hook.  These can be purchased at Michael's or JoAnn's for about $2.  You will need size G or 6 and I have also used an H or 8. That one is a little larger and is fine for the yarn.  Amy uses a smaller one that is F or 5.  It is up to you.  I find that I am more comfortable with a larger needle (I can see everything better!).  If you were at the Word of Life meeting yesterday, you were looking at ones that were made with the G needle.  I think that this is the one I will be using and the one I prefer. The solid blue blanket with the variegated edge was the only one I have used the H for (as an experiment - little harder to get through the holes).  E-mail or call if you have any questions.

I am so excited that we have more people helping with our blankets.  Remember that you can tie them, sew them, or crochet the edges.  We take all donations.  I already have a huge boxful in my closet (at least 26 in there).  I will send this out again closer to the time of the meeting.  Please let me know then if you are planning to attend.  The more the merrier!!

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
