Happy Birthday

Today is my mother's 82nd birthday.  We spent all day yesterday in the medical center for her follow-up visit with her cardiologist.  They are very excited about her progress and think that she is doing a great job.  We are going to participate in a mother/daughter study there next week.

We are on our way to the Houston Low Vision Group meeting this morning at Bayland Community Center.  What a wonderful group of people they are.  They were so friendly to me last month, and that is when I met Lovely.  She found out about our group and decided that she wanted to help us make blankets. She is going to show her first one off this morning.   Go Lovely!!!

It is a beautiful day and I am looking forward to spending it with my mother.  I am so glad and grateful that she lives so close now and that we get to spend so much more time together.  I am looking forward to seeing the people at Bayland again.  We have a birthday cake surprise for my mom.   I will read a couple of passages to them from the This I Believe book.  I hope they will enjoy them.

Houston Low Vision Club Meeting - Bayland Community Center

We had the best time!  Thank you Lee for inviting me to speak and participate in the meeting.  I met so many wonderful, positive, energetic people!  We had several speakers - Lovely Washington spoke about health and exercise.  She has her bachelor's and master's degree from University of Houston, and is going to U of H full-time now to pursue this field.  She was so funny and uplifting.  I am happy to say that she was thrilled with the blankets and will be joining us at our meeting Thursday evening.  She called me about an hour after I had gotten home and was so excited about it.  She and Martha, one of the other ladies at the meeting, talked about it all the way back home, and they both decided to come.  I believe that Martha will be coming to the morning meeting next month.  I am very happy to have new members, and ones that are so excited about learning what we do.  The whole group wanted to go on a field trip to Jo-Ann's.  It was fun to see such enthusiasm.

I also spoke to them about reading to them, and they were very excited about a book club.  The problem is transportation, and they can't get there every week to continue a book.  All agreed that trying to read once a month wouldn't work, so we are going to start with a short story.  They left it up to me to decide.  The group is a mixture of men, women, young, and older, so I'm not sure what will appeal to them, so I will have my work cut out for me.  If I don't make it interesting from the start, I will lose my audience.  Sounds like a challenge and I like those.

It was a very uplifting day and one I would recommend to anyone that could join us.  I came back totally rejuvenated and grateful. I am going to try to get my mother to go with me next time.  It would have been the perfect thing for her.  Stay warm this weekend and I hope to see many of you at the Thursday meeting.  You have to meet Lovely.  She is as lovely as her name is.

What a surprise!!   Six more weeks of winter.  I have had it with these dreary, rainy days.  I am getting a lot done inside the house, and have also had a chance to start our new book, but I would love to see some sunshine.

My meeting with the Houston Low Vision Group has been set.  They meet on the 2nd Friday of the month, so I will go speak to them about our organization on February 12.  The meeting is at the Bayland Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet, and is from 11:00-1:00.  They are interested in our blankets and being read to, so if you are interested in helping me, please let me know.

Don't forget to scroll down and read the earlier blogs for more information about our meetings for February, quilt classes, BookPage, and photos.  See you soon!

Houston Low Vision Support Group

Lee and I finally had a chance to talk after our January meetings, and she wants me to attend the Houston Low Vision Support Group in Bayland Park to talk to them about making blankets and possibly reading books to them.  This group formed when Lee was a student at University of Houston and saw a need for people with low vision to form a group to help each other.  The group became large enough to break off into a Southwest Houston Group and that is the group I will talk too.  The initial visit will be just to show them the blankets and talk about what we do.  They will then have some time to think about if they want to make blankets individually, in a small group, or wait awhile before deciding.  They meet on the 2nd Friday of the month at Bayland Park, 6400 Bissonnet.  This is another opportunity to have someone help us make more blankets while letting them know how wonderful it feels to help the community.  I am looking forward to this new challenge.

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
