Morning Meeting Notes

3/10/2010

I was disappointed at the attendance of our morning meeting.  This is such an important venture for me and I have waited so long in my life to be able to organize it, that I hoped many felt the same way.  In my heart, I choose to believe that many do.

I was thrilled that Martha showed up, and that we got a chance to spend more time getting to know each other.  I am sad that she didn't get a chance to meet anyone else in the group.  I know that by reading about our group meetings and all that we have accomplished in such a short time, that she was not expecting to be the only one to show up for two months in a row.  I am happy to say that she is committed to making a blanket a month, and she and I agree that it isn't a hard commitment to meet.  After making a couple of them, you can finish one in 2-3 hours, especially with the fringe tie.  She also has a great commitment to Star of Hope, because they provide a great service to the community, and because her son is working on his Eagle Scout project there.

I hope that most of the people on our mailing list decide to help with at least 2 blankets this year or the donation of material to make two blankets.  If they could have seen the faces of the people at Star of Hope, I think there would be no question that they would contribute.  I know how busy everyone is.  I have a busy life too.  I just feel that life is about making a difference and we are so fortunate to have the lives that we have.  Surely we can help others less fortunate.  If not, what does that say about our society and our future?

Oh well, it is time to go to bed.  I will wake up in the morning hoping that I hear positive results from the letter that was sent out today.  Then on to my next venture--contacting businesses for support and a mention on our sponsor page.  It truly is all for a very worthwhile cause.  I don't think that anyone that truly knows me would say that I give up easily, so the project will continue and continue to grow.

Star of Hope Library

This is a photo of the library at Star of Hope.  This shelf unit and window/window seat was donated by Barbara Bush and was located in her home at one time.  What a great reading room for the kids or grand kids!  As you can see, they need many more books, and we are so glad that Mark C. is working on increasing their collection.  Clean out your bookcases and bring any books that you want to donate to my house and we will give them to Martha.

Check the video out in the posting above and see what you think.  Do you see the photos of what you made?  Isn't it fun?  We will continue to update as time goes by and more products or books are added.

Visit to Star of Hope

These are some of the blankets that we donated to Star of Hope Mission this morning.  We also had several other bags of blankets already loaded in the car.  Betty N. was waiting for us at the door, and everyone seemed delighted to receive the blankets.  We all posed for pictures and these will be included in the updated video (most likely posted tomorrow).  Everyone was excited as they examined them and tried to decide which one was their favorite.  My impression was that they were very happily surprised by the number and quality of items we were donating.  I don't think they expected so many wonderful, colorful, plush things. They were truly grateful. It was a fantastic feeling and warmed all of our hearts.

Amy S. found some additional blankets to donate when she was shopping at IKEA.   They were fleece and as soft and warm as our no-sew blankets.  She had the idea to sew or crochet a decorative edge on them and dress them up a bit.  They were adorable.

We also donated all of the knitted scarves that we had, so if any of you are looking for a knitting project, you might want to get started on scarves.  They are very easy to do with the basic knit stitch.  I use the Thick and Quick yarn, and you can have a scarf knitted in no time.  Perfect for all of these cold winter days we have been suffering through, and they will be ready for next fall and winter.

Then, Betty took us on a tour of the facility.  They have a very nice and very well planned group of buildings to assist the homeless in learning skills to become independent.  There is a building for single women, another one for families, a dining hall, and classrooms.  They even have a small library with a bookshelf/window unit donated by Barbara Bush (it used to be in her house!).  That photo will be included in our video also.  As you know, many of us have been donating books so that Martha C's son can complete his Eagle Scout project by helping them increase the children's collection.  If you want to donate some children's books, just drop them by my house.  They also have a teen room, computer classrooms, and playground equipment outside.  We visited the nursery and the toddler's classrooms also, and it reminded us all of Pre-K.

They definitely need and want more of our products, so we will continue to work on them all year.  They feel that they need them for children more than adults, so you may want to consider that when making your material selections. Some of the other items that they need year round are:  sheets (any size), towels, T-shirts, light weight jackets, and coats.  These may be gently used.  Thank you
Betty for taking us on the tour.  We appreciate it and all of the good work that everyone is doing there.

Thank you Cheri J. and Amy S. for coming with me and sharing the moment.  Thanks again to Cheri J. for driving.

Delivery to Star of Hope on Monday

I spent yesterday afternoon sewing labels on all of the blankets that we are going to deliver on Monday.  Once again, I have learned a lesson the hard way.  It would be easier to sew the label on the material with the sewing machine before assembling the blanket.  Of course, I didn't have the labels before the blankets were made, so I did the best I could.  They are sewn in by hand (not my greatest talent), and I'm glad they are able to tell everyone that they were handmade by our group.  I am wondering how they will decide who gets these adorable blankets and scarves?  The last time I heard from them they had over 350 children staying there, so I'm glad I don't have to make that decision.

We are leaving from my house at 9:30 on Monday morning, so if anyone else wants to join us, we would love to have you.  I know it will be a great feeling to meet the representative and give her the things we have worked on for so long.  We are also going to go on a tour of the Women's and Children's Transitional Center. Please come with us if you can.

I am working on Low Vision Group things today, and tomorrow Lovely is coming over for her private lesson on her blanket.  I will be happy to do that for anyone else that needs a refresher cour
se.  I have another one scheduled for next week.  Just e-mail me or call me and I will be happy to set it up.  I am also going to help her read some of her schoolwork and film her doing sign language for another course she is taking.  She is truly a wonder.  I'm hoping that some of the sign language will rub off on me.  I have always wanted to learn it.

I got all of my new books yesterday, and I am so excited.  I wonder which one we will choose for May.  They all look great!  Hope all of you are enjoying this beautiful sunny day.

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
