Notes from Meeting Yesterday

1/13/2010

We had two new guests at our meeting yesterday, and that is always exciting!  We get to show off all of our handmade items and share what we are trying to do.  Welcome to Judi and Marilyn.  We hope to see you again very soon.  Jodie shared a beautiful quilted wall hanging that she just finished.  She picked up the kit in Alaska a couple of years ago, and now she has finished it and is ready to hang it above the aquarium in her home.  The colors were gorgeous and the salmon reminded me of Alaska.  She has also volunteered to give us Rag Quilt lessons (it's really more like a sewn blanket).  We will try to plan it for a Sunday afternoon, because she says that we will need just a couple of consecutive hours to get the hang of it.  I am so excited about.  I love the one at Buttons and Bows, so if you have a chance, stop by and see it so you will know what we are planning to do.  These will make excellent items to add to our list of growing blankets, hats, scarves, etc.  It is supposed to be fast and easy, so I can't wait.  You do need a sewing machine to do it, but all you have to do is be able to sew in a straight line and cut material in a straight line.  I think I am up for it!   More details to follow.

We are also going to attend the Common Thread Circle meeting at Memorial Drive Methodist Church next Tuesday.  They meet in Room D220 at 9:30.  I am anxious to deliver some of our items to them to distribute to the hospitals around town, and I want to hear about the products that they make.  Anyone interested is welcome to meet us there.  We believe that it is the building on the left side of the church (when facing the church), so park in the east lot.  I am hoping that some of the people there might be willing to help us with our group.  I know that I am interested in finding out what they do and trying to help them.

Please start keeping your receipts for materials, etc. that you are contributing/donating to our group.  We are in the process of filing papers to make this a non-profit organization.  I am very committed to this cause, and I hope that you are too.  There are many people in need, in many ways, and it is such a great feeling to be able to help.  If we all start this new year with a commitment to make a blanket and a hat, or a blanket and a scarf, or even two blankets, by the end of the year we will have 20-30 of each item.   If you are able to make more, that's even better.  We have to start now to build up inventory for the end of the year.  I wish that we had already been able to make our donations for this year, because I am sure that many people could have used our warm, soft blankets and scarves last week in the freezing cold weather.  Please make the commitment with me to continue working on this in 2010.

Thank you Rachael for bringing lunch.  We all had a great time sharing ideas, working hard, and then sitting down to a entertaining lunch.  There was a lot of laughter and some very good stories being told.  I can't get the idea of a wasp out of my head!  Anyway, thank everyone again for participating, and I hope to see most of you at the Thursday evening meeting on January 21.  If you have anything to donate, please bring it then.  I am bringing things to the Methodist church next week, and will bring things to the Star of Hope Mission after our last meeting in January.  Thank you again so much.

Your blog looked so simple to design that I decided to create one, thanks!

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
