Today was our trip to see the Painted Churches up by Schulenberg and to see the Bluebonnets. My mother and I went with the Bayland Community Center Low Vision Group. Boy did we have fun! First of all, I had never heard of the Painted Churches of Schulenberg and they were incredible. We saw three of them and each one was prettier than the one before. We had a fabulous guide that told us many details about when the Czech Republic and the Germans moved to that area, a great deal about Texas history (don't you just love it), and she also gave a lot of information about the Catholic faith (the painted churches are Catholic churches). They were beautiful !!! Since I am the best sighted one in the bunch, I was elected to pick everyone up (the list is growing, but that is OK), take them to the community center to meet the bus, and to keep track of everyone. There is such a feeling of togetherness, acceptance, and genuine interest in each others lives in this group. I love spending time with them. I have lots of photos, but I'm not sure how they will look since we were not allowed to use a flash in the churches. I can't begin to describe these "treasures", but I can encourage all of you to take a trip up there sometime to check it out. Tours are arranged through the Chamber of Commerce in Schulenbrg. On the way back, the bluebonnets, Indian Paint Brush, and Buttercups were out in full bloom. They were beautiful and I'm glad that my mom got a chance to see them. Being from Louisiana, she has never seen a Bluebonnet! She has heard the stories over the years about how beautiful they are and now she knows. It was a long exhausting day, but well worth it. We meet again on Friday for our next meeting. There is a fabulous speaker scheduled to speak on "Finding a Pony in the Manure" Being Positive under Negative Circumstances. I am looking forward to it - it sounds like a talk that everyone can benefit from. Have a great week!
I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph. Some adjectives that come to mind: curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think? Claire
