September Meeting

9/22/2012

We had a great meeting Thursday evening. We were missing a few people, but we still had great conversation, laughs, and somewhat of a book discussion :) Some liked the book, some didn't, but we all learned about leprosy (Hansen's Disease) and Hawaii. It turned out that most of us had done extra research on those subjects, so I think overall that indicates interest in the book and its subject. Plus, everyone attending the meeting had read the book!!!

The October selection is posted on the website. There is a lot of interest in this book, so I don't want to say too much about it. I hope everyone enjoys it because I was the one that suggested it. For those of you that weren't at the meeting, I will give you a quick run down as to why. I was riding in the car one day and heard a book discussion on NPR about this book. I remembered reading it a long time ago. It was apparently longer than I thought because it is at least 20 years old. Anyway, the discussion was very interesting because people are still reading it and still discussing it. I guess you would say it still has a following. The author supposedly was never able to write a book that was as good or popular. They also made a movie about it and changed the ending, and many people were upset about that. We decided that we would read the book (it has been rereleased) and then we will get together and watch the movie.

I LOVE this idea. I know that the biggest challenge will be in setting a time and date to do the movie thing. Even if you know that you will not be able to attend the October LOTS meeting, be sure to read the book so you can come to the movie night.

I have been informed that Dee is already working on one now. She was tickled as can be to see them. Needless to say my arms and back are sore! I'm going to send out a couple more short notes to everyone to try to line some other things up. I didn't want everyone to try to read long e-mail notes. Have a great weekend!! Claire P.S. Thank you Cheri for the grabber thing (can't remember the name of it). It was a tremendous help when working with all of that material. I still have a few pieces of donated material if anyone is interested.

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
