Visit to Star of Hope

These are some of the blankets that we donated to Star of Hope Mission this morning.  We also had several other bags of blankets already loaded in the car.  Betty N. was waiting for us at the door, and everyone seemed delighted to receive the blankets.  We all posed for pictures and these will be included in the updated video (most likely posted tomorrow).  Everyone was excited as they examined them and tried to decide which one was their favorite.  My impression was that they were very happily surprised by the number and quality of items we were donating.  I don't think they expected so many wonderful, colorful, plush things. They were truly grateful. It was a fantastic feeling and warmed all of our hearts.

Amy S. found some additional blankets to donate when she was shopping at IKEA.   They were fleece and as soft and warm as our no-sew blankets.  She had the idea to sew or crochet a decorative edge on them and dress them up a bit.  They were adorable.

We also donated all of the knitted scarves that we had, so if any of you are looking for a knitting project, you might want to get started on scarves.  They are very easy to do with the basic knit stitch.  I use the Thick and Quick yarn, and you can have a scarf knitted in no time.  Perfect for all of these cold winter days we have been suffering through, and they will be ready for next fall and winter.

Then, Betty took us on a tour of the facility.  They have a very nice and very well planned group of buildings to assist the homeless in learning skills to become independent.  There is a building for single women, another one for families, a dining hall, and classrooms.  They even have a small library with a bookshelf/window unit donated by Barbara Bush (it used to be in her house!).  That photo will be included in our video also.  As you know, many of us have been donating books so that Martha C's son can complete his Eagle Scout project by helping them increase the children's collection.  If you want to donate some children's books, just drop them by my house.  They also have a teen room, computer classrooms, and playground equipment outside.  We visited the nursery and the toddler's classrooms also, and it reminded us all of Pre-K.

They definitely need and want more of our products, so we will continue to work on them all year.  They feel that they need them for children more than adults, so you may want to consider that when making your material selections. Some of the other items that they need year round are:  sheets (any size), towels, T-shirts, light weight jackets, and coats.  These may be gently used.  Thank you
Betty for taking us on the tour.  We appreciate it and all of the good work that everyone is doing there.

Thank you Cheri J. and Amy S. for coming with me and sharing the moment.  Thanks again to Cheri J. for driving.

I would like to think that I can't be described in a short paragraph.  Some adjectives that come to mind:  curious, caring, kind, generous, excitable, motivated, emotional, fun, organized. What do you think?    Claire
